Iceland / Best time to visit
Best time to visit Iceland
Season patterns for Iceland in plain terms — when the weather cooperates, when crowds and prices peak, and when to think twice.
The seasons
Iceland through the year
Peak season
June to August brings the midnight sun, open highland roads and every tour running — the fullest version of Iceland, at peak prices.
Shoulder seasons
May and September balance daylight with fewer crowds; September also opens the northern-lights season as nights darken.
Low season
October to April is the dark season: aurora hunting, icy waterfalls and moody coastlines, but short days, closed highland routes and weather that can rewrite plans.
Festivals and dates to know
Iceland's seasons are its festivals: the midnight sun around the June solstice and the aurora season through winter are the two draws everything else arranges itself around.
